These three angels represent the Trinity as mentioned in Genesis chapter 18, v. 1-9.
The angels are painted forming a circle symbolizing unity and indivisibility. This was a new form of this particular icon motif, created by Andrei Rublev, in the 14th century, which expressed the Russion wish for unity among Russians, in order to overcome the Mongol invaders that were sweeping across the land at that time. Earlier forms of the Holy Trinity icon include more details of the Abrahham and Sarah story.
