The word Platytera, which describes this icon motif is a Greek word meaning “wider than the heavens”. One liturgical text says “He made Mary’s womb wider than the heavens”.
In the Platytera motif Mary is represented frontally. Jesus is sitting on her lap in an orant pose (arms raised and outstretched in prayer). This posture is an early Christian gesture of prayer.
MP OY abbreviates Mater Theoy (Mother of God).
Jesus said "I am who I am. The three letters in His halo mean "The being". |
