Archangel Gabriel is one of the three archangels mentioned in the Bible. He is the heavenly messenger who appears in order to reveal God's will. Those who deliver messages of lesser importance are called angels; and those who proclaim messages of supreme importance are called archangels. Gabriel appeared to Mary to let her know she'd been selected to bear the Saviour. (Luke 1:25-38) He often carries a trumpet which he will blow to announce the second coming. In Christian tradition Gabriel is the angel of mercy while Michael is the angel of judgment. Among Muslims, Gabriel is believed to be the spirit who revealed the sacred writings to the Prophet Muhammad. He is the herald who is the Muslims caller to prayer in Heaven. Gabriel is the prince of fire and the spirit who presides over thunder and the ripening of fruits. He is an accomplished linguist, having taught Joseph the 70 languages spoken at Babel.
In this icon Archangel Gabriel holds a staff and a globe inscribed with cross. Both these items are customary and reflect the authority of Christ’s heavenly court. A fillet around the curly hair signifies purity, chastity and incorruptability of the angels. |
